We, at Spring Valley School believe that in order to prepare our students to become thoughtful, productive and contributing citizens of the future, we must provide a safe and stimulating educational environment which challenges each student’s capacity to grow intellectually while at the same time respecting and supporting his or her need to grow socially and emotionally.

Spring Valley School is located in the foothills of Eastern Madera County, surrounded by fields of grazing cattle and sometimes visited by bobcats, coyotes, hawks, and eagles. Built in 1889 to educate the children of local cattle ranchers, Spring Valley School has grown from a one-room schoolhouse to its current two permanent buildings and two portable classrooms. Spring Valley School serves approximately 90 students, kindergarten through fifth grade.

Chawanakee Unified School District provides for a large alternative education program of independent study/home school. Some of the offices and classrooms for the independent study/home school share the Spring Valley School campus. Additionally, the district is proud to be opening the new Minarets High School campus this fall as well as launching two new Digital Middle School campuses at North Fork and O’Neals. Chawanakee Unified’s middle and high school programs are innovative and cutting edge, like nothing offered in our area.

The school grounds, buildings and restrooms are all clean, safe, and adequate. We receive many compliments on the appearance of our school and our playgrounds.

We have an excellent library with a library technician. The library is open every day and children visit and check out books daily, if needed. Accelerated Reader is provided so that children can read books at their own independent reading level.

We have a computer lab with a computer technician and there are computers in every classroom. A variety of software is available and access to the Internet is available and monitored.

The Extended Day Care program begins at 7:00 a.m. and closes at 6:15 p.m. Spring Valley School offers affordable childcare before and after school in an effort to increase academic achievement, help working families and keep children safe. The after-school program provides supervised homework and reading, snacks, outdoor play time, art, drama, music and cooking. The before-school program is a quiet time, allowing for study, reading, board games and individual projects.

All classes participate in academic field trips such as the Chaffee Fresno Zoo and the Fresno Philharmonic. Students may also participate in the Mountain Area Ski School (MASS) at Badger Pass in Yosemite National Park during the winter.

Spring Valley School students may participate in many extra-curricular activities. Students play competitive team sports, they participate in instrumental and choral music, Academic Pentathlon, the Pine Needle Oral Interpretation Festival, Student Council, and many other activities. Students also cultivate the school garden.

Additional programs are available to students. The Title I program is “school wide,” allowing us to serve all children with academic needs. A Reading Specialist helps students and consults with teachers. Special Education is available for students through the Resource Specialist Program, Speech Therapy and other services. Children who need a Special Day Class attend North Fork School in North Fork. Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) is available for qualified students.

Spring Valley School greatly benefits from parents who support school activities and fundraisers throughout the year. The school has a strong base of parent volunteers who help in the classrooms. Parents are also welcome to join the Parent Club. The Parent Club raises funds for many programs, buys many things, and provides support to the staff. The Fall Festival is a popular and successful annual event. The school also benefits from several community partnerships, including our neighbors, Ponderosa Telephone.
