Our School Profile
Loma Vista School is located in mid-town Ventura and serves approximately 350 students K-5. It is one of 17 elementary schools in VUSD. It also serves as Ventura County's School for Deaf and Hard of hearing students (preschool-grade 5). The racial/ethnic composition is 74% white, 17% Hispanic or Latino, 3.6% African American, 2.5% Asian. The school opened in 1952 and is scheduled for modernization the summer of 2003 with new infrastructures, classroom interior updates and central heating. All classrooms are equipped with telephones and Internet accesses. Computers are replaced on a four-year cycle. The campus is characterized by a sense of warmth, vibrancy, and community. Brightly colored flowers bloom throughout the campus, vigorous gardens fill raised beds between classrooms. Everywhere there is a sense of warmth and welcome.
Of the 23 staff members, 12 hold Master Degrees and 5 hold dual credentials. The majority of the teachers have taught at Loma Vista for more than 10 years with little turn over in staff.
Because Loma Vista serves over 40 deaf and hard of hearing youngsters from the surrounding districts, the school provides a unique opportunity for students to learn American Sign Language. The integration of two languages is observed throughout the campus, at assemblies, on the playground and in the classrooms.
Our mission at Loma Vista is Equity and Excellence for Everyone. The school motto is Home of the LeopardWhere Everyone Has a Spot, and the staff is committed to ensuring that every child and his/her parents feel connected to the school. The PTA membership stands at 192, an astounding figure for a school with 350 students. Over 1,086 volunteer hours are recorded in a three-month period exemplifying the strong school home partnership we foster at Loma Vista. The school's 96.52% daily attendance rate is another indicator that students feel safe and connected at school. All staff enforces the school wide discipline policy consistently. Discipline referrals are minimal with three suspensions reported for the 2001-2002 school year. The peer mediation program is in its fourth year at Loma Vista. Over 40 students are trained in conflict resolution skills each year. Skills are practiced each day as these students are assigned to the playground to assist classmates in solving conflicts in a healthy way. Organized lunch activities such as dance, intramural and chess club are offered to students, as a means of helping students feel connected to the school.
Academically, Loma Vista excels, a fact reflected in the school's estimated 848 API and steady growth noted on state testing over the past three years. Teachers meet regularly to design, adapt and assess instructional strategies. All students are provided access to the district adopted core curriculum. Parents are kept informed about student achievement in the form of regularly scheduled parent conferences, monthly newsletters, PTA and student council meetings.
Student hours are from 8:05 to 2:15 for primary grades (285 minutes) and 8:05- 2:20 (305 minutes) for grades four and Five. Kindergarten students attend school for 190 minutes per day. Minimum days for parent conferences are offered a total of 9 times a year to provide teachers time for parent conferencing.
