Jefferson Elementary, situated at the north end of Cloverdale, currently serves approximately 450 kindergarten through third grade students. Our purpose is to create a safe, caring, nurturing environment, which fosters positive self-esteem, cooperation, responsibility, respect, and a love of learning. In classrooms limited to 20 students each, our fully credentialed staff teaches a standards-based curriculum, all grades on a full day schedule. We also have an on-site preschool program and director that articulates with the kindergarten teachers. Our school has the support of a Title 1 teacher, a Teacher-Student Support Teacher, an EL assistant, several instructional assistants for strategic intervention, and a Special Education Resource program.

In the 2007-08 school year, Jefferson Elementary established Professional Learning Communities with teachers and administration. Teachers collaborate every Wednesday (shortened instructional day) and analyze student work, and/or benchmark tests. Teachers make adjustments in their teaching strategies based on data and will write common formative assessments to track progress and share strategies that work. Our school is currently in Program Improvement Year 5+; in 2007-08 we made 'Safe Harbor' and are encouraged that promoting best practices in teaching and emphasizing personal best achievement will make a difference. All teachers have an Academic Language Group, leveled by language proficiency and serving the English Learner as well as all students with daily focused language instruction.

All the staff at Jefferson practices the BEST Positive Behavior model. From the playground, to the hallways, the library, the cafeteria, and into the classroom, we are fostering the best in every child. We have a School Site Council, a dedicated Parent Teacher Association, a monthly Parent Education night, and an active English Learners Advisory Committee. Before and after school day care is open daily, as well as a three hour after school program offering homework help and enrichment activities. Jefferson Elementary strives to promote a close, supportive relationship between students, staff, parents, and community to create a quality education for our children.
