Welcome to Huff School's 2009-2010 school year. As we enter our twelfth year, we celebrate our accomplishments as one of the top performing schools in the state. At the same time, we continue to foster a community that places a high value on an enjoyable and well-rounded learning environment.
Principal's Message (Aug. 2009)
Welcome Back!
Welcome to a new school year. I'm pleased to report that all facilities and classrooms will be ready to go for the first day of school. A special thank you goes to Raul Delgado and Renaldo Chairez for cleaning and maintaining our facilities in a timely manner. It's amazing what a team of two motivated custodians can accomplish!
We are fully staffed! Teachers are busy in their classrooms arranging furniture and designing meaningful learning experiences for their new students. All teachers are also participating in 5 days of professional development prior to students arriving on August 25th. I'm please to share with you the wonderful new staff members who have joined our instructional team this year. Olivia Sorell, a recent graduate of Santa Clara University, joins our 1st grade team; Kristen Casterson, a recent graduate of UC Santa Barbara joins our 4th grade team; Grant Blair, who taught a 5/6 combo last year in Santa Clara, joins our 5th grade team; and Mariko Kobata, a seasoned Special Day Class teacher, will be teaching our 4/5th SDC class. I know our community will make them feel welcome!
Can you believe that Huff has grown from a school of 250 to over 550 students projected for the 09/10 school year?! We've added a 5th kindergarten class and will now be using our former art room as a classroom. No need to worry though - our veteran art teachers will be bringing the art to the regular classrooms. However, with increased enrollment we welcome the diverse perspectives of our families and the large pool of parent and community resources that will enrich the lives of our students.
Initial test scores indicate solid academic standing for our student population. Parents will receive official results from the State at their homes. As a staff we will examine our scores and progress and determine next steps. However, in addition to our review of State standards, curriculum, and assessments, we also as a staff are concerned with the whole child. This year we will be launching a new program that will include monthly themes, such as respect, and teachers will implement lessons in their classrooms. We will also explore avenues to promote these characteristics school wide and provide student recognition of positive behavior. Our PTA is continuing their important work of providing community building activities, such as Science Night, multicultural events, Huff's Silent Auction, and helping to fund important work being done in the classroom, from purchasing technology to sponsoring field trips. We have outstanding PTA leadership under the direction of Lisa Chen and Julie Rodriguez and their team this year.
Deborah Tuban, our resident historian, and myself are working to improve our already wonderful weekly Huff 'n Stuff this year. We're planning on providing parents with the choice to receive this publication via email or hard copy once school begins. All attachments will be scanned so all flyers will be accessible through email. All publications will also be posted on our website each week. Look for new and interesting features such as the 'Thought for the Week', 'Spotlight on Parent Volunteers' and "Spotlight on Students' and many other exciting new features.
I truly look forward to seeing all of our Huff Hawks on August 25th and hearing their summer stories and their smiling faces.
