Esparto Elementary School serves students from Esparto, Madison and the Capay Valley. Students from Kindergarten through fifth grade attend our school. A dedicated teaching staff of 20 certificated teachers delivers a standards-based curriculum. A special education staff of teachers, specialists and instructional aides supports students with special needs. A Title 1 teacher and instructional aides support the reading program. Bilingual teachers and aides support the English learners throughout the school. Our Librarian helps provide full library services to all of our students. Our competent office staff keeps the school running smoothly. The hardworking cafeteria staff feeds our students breakfast and lunch. The maintenance and custodial staff are a critical part of our school team, also. An active School Site Council and PTSA support our school in many ways. The School Site Council has sponsored the Crocker Art Museum’s Art Ark, The Sacramento Zoo Mobile, the Davis Science Center’s Explorit program, and Mark Abildgaard as teacher-artist. An active English Learner Advisory Council meets regularly to discuss the educational opportunities for our English Learner students.
The ethnic breakdown of our school is 58.6% Hispanic, less than 1% American Indian, 39.4% Caucasian, less than 1% African American, less than 1% Philipino, and less than 1 % Asian. SAT 9 (STAR testing) results are included in our school’s Accountability Report Card (see attached). Our school’s free and reduced lunch count is 64.7% and the district average is 51.6%.
Our district receives the students who live in the Madison Migrant Camp from April 15 to October 15. We have two classes (a K/1 class and a 2nd/3rd-grade class) dedicated to our migrant students. 4th and 5th grade migrant cycle students are mainstreamed into the regular classrooms. In 2002 we had approximately 80 students during the migrant cycle registered in our school. There are 169 English Learners in our school, including the 80 migrant cycle students.
