Curriculum

Baywood’s curriculum and instructional practices are aligned with State and District Standards. Over the past 5 years Baywood has ranked in the top 10% of high performing schools in the state.

Baywood’s curriculum is developmentally appropriate for each child with a focus on differentiated instruction. The school’s literacy program focuses on phonics and reading comprehension. In math and science, there is an emphasis on problem solving with hands-on, activity-based instruction and the use of manipulatives. There is also an emphasis on project-based, integrated units in social studies. Writing is taught across all curricular areas. A specialist teaches Baywood’s programs in perceptual motor training and physical education.

Parent Involvement & Support

Baywood has a very active and supportive PTA and School Site Council. Many parents work as volunteers in the school. They offer assistance to teachers in individual classrooms, in the school library, on the playground and provide many cultural-enrichment activities and assemblies for students. The PTA sponsors the Baywood’s Eager All-star Readers (BEARS) club to reinforce Baywood's emphasis on developing lifelong reading skills and character education. The PTA sponsors the Red Ribbon-Say No To Drugs Week, science and book fairs as well as the glee club, talent show and Project Wee Care, which supports members of the San Mateo community who are in need of assistance with clothing and food.
