Welcome to Mariposa! Mariposa used to be called "Las Mariposas," the butterflies. The town of Mariposa is filled with fascinating places to visit. Many of these places tell of Gold Rush times. Our small town was first started by the Gold Rush miners, who used to placer mine. Placer mining is mining on top instead of under sand. It is still a mining town today. The streets in Mariposa were named after John C. Fremont's family. Some of the street names have changed, but Jesse Street was named after his grandfather. Jones Street was named after his brother-in-law.

Mariposa County was named the "Mother of Counties" because it was the biggest county (it was one-fifth of California) in California until, in 1852, it began to be divided. Also in our town is the oldest courthouse still in use in California, the Visitor Center (History Center), plus the California Mineral Museum.

About 2000 people have their homes in the town of Mariposa. The town has two elementary schools. There is also a middle school and a high school. Our school, Mariposa Elementary, has K-6th grades.

We are so lucky to live near such a spectacular national park as Yosemite. Our community thrives with tourists headed to Yosemite. Yosemite Falls, Half Dome, and El Capital are just some of the spectacular sights to see just 40 minutes from town.

Mariposa may look sleepy at first, but it is very exciting. On the weekends there is usually a sport or activity to watch or play. There are events at the Fair Grounds. On Labor Day weekend we have a county fair with rides, animals and crafts. You can see everybody you know there! The town is full of historic homes and Gold Rush sites.

Within a short drive there is Merced, a big town, with even more activities like roller- blading, shopping malls and movie theaters.

Our winters in Mariposa are mild, but cold. Summer is much different. It is hot. Luckily, there is a town pool and park to relax in. The Mariposa Rotary is building an amphitheater for performances there, too. Mariposa is located at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The Mariposa Creek runs through town, and the wild Merced River is not far away. We love our peaceful little town of Mariposa, and we hope you will like it, too.
